REPORT: FC Supra sign 'best left-back in CPL history' 馃憖 | OneSoccer Direct 猡达笍
FC Supra du Québec are continuing to load up ahead of their inaugural Canadian Premier League season, as OneSoccer's Jordan Wilson reported this week that the club is set to sign former Inter Toronto full back Diyaeddine Abzi for the 2026 season.
Born in Morocco but raised in Montréal after the age of 9, Abzi previously spent four seasons in the CPL between 2019 and 2022, before spending the 2022-2023 campaign in France with Ligue 2 side Pau FC, and the 2023-2024 season in Spain with La Liga 2 side CD Leganés.
Unfortunately, Abzi was then handed a shocking two-year suspension by the French Anti-Doping Agency in 2024, one that's set to expire in March of this year - just in time for the start of the CPL season. At the same time, it means he hasn't played much soccer in the last few years, as he also played just 124 minutes for Leganés before his suspension, meaning that his last significant run of action came in the first half of 2023 when he was still with Pau.
The good news for Abzi and Supra, however, is that at just 27, the full back should still have plenty of gas left in the tank and should be well-rested after this break. Therefore, while it might take some time for him to get up to speed on the pitch, he hopes to quickly be able to discover his past level, one that had him sitting as one of the best full-backs in the CPL when at his best.
Because of that, it's a good coup for Supra, who have also made some key signings ahead of their inaugural season, including CPL standouts David Choinière, Sean Rea and Aboubacar Sissoko, among others, giving them a solid core group of players to build around.
With a mandate to sign only Québecois talent, be it those who were born and raised in the province or those who came later on but now call it home, Supra will feel that a strong Québecois player pool can spur them on to impressive heights right from day one - and they'll hope the signing of someone like Abzi can help them do that.
