RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Vancouver FC vs. Cavalry FC | July 13, 2025
For a fourth consecutive time this season, Vancouver FC and Cavalry FC played to a draw over 90 minutes, this time 0-0 in Langley.
After their disappointing loss on penalties to Vancouver FC in the Canadian Championship quarter-final on Tuesday, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. made five changes to his side for Sunday's contest, bringing in defender Eryk Kobza, full-back Fraser Aird, midfielder Max Piepgrass, and adding Maël Henry and Tobias Warschewski to the mix up top.
The opening 20 minutes of the match had little action of note, with Cavalry holding the ball well, but struggling to play through Vancouver FC's compact 4-4-2 defensive shape.
Cavalry had a couple of good opportunities from some clever runs in behind from Nicolas Wähling, but on neither occasion was he able to get a shot on target. In particular, in the 22nd minute, Allan Enyou did an outstanding job of getting back and taking the ball away from the German attacker.
Both sides tried to create chances in transition as the half progressed, but neither side were willing to let the other get a yard of space in behind -- resulting in four yellow cards, two each, in the space of 10 minutes midway through the half. With Cavalry's Mihail Gherasimencov one of those players on a booking, Afshin Ghotbi astutely switched Thierno Bah over to the right flank to attack his side.
Sergio Camargo had a solid chance in the 33rd minute after a cross from Aird found him in space at the back post, but his half-volley was sliced over the net.
Vancouver then had a great opportunity in the 42nd minute, as a cross from Pathé Ndiaye found Bah at the backpost, he made an incredibly clever chested pass to Vasco Fry, but Kobza got a piece of Fry's shot and deflected it wide.
The two sides went into the half with no goals and no shots on target from either side during a first half where chances were few and far between.
The second half started in a similarly cagey fashion, with the first shot of the match coming in the 48th minute, an effort from nearly his own half from Ndiaye that never really troubled Marco Carducci.
Sunday's match took a significant turn in the 62nd minute, when Nicolás Mezquida was shown a red card for a late tackle on Kobza.
Cavalry instantly looked to press their man advantage, controlling the ball and looking to pin Vancouver back in their half, while Kobza was booed by the home crowd every time he touched the ball.
In the 74th minute, substitute Ali Musse had a great opportunity with one of his first touches of the match as Camargo found him in space, but his left-footed strike was straight at Callum Irving.
Bah forced a good save from Carducci in the 80th minute, as a deflected strike forced the Cavalry goalkeeper to get low and deflect the ball wide of his net for a corner.
Cavalry had an incredible chance to win it in second half stoppage time, as on the second phase of a free kick the ball fell to Kobza but he put his effort straight at Irving. The Vancouver keeper was called into action again moments later, as he stopped a low strike from Gherasimencov.
The single point doesn't do much for either side in the table, and Cavalry FC remain in fourth, while Vancouver FC in the eighth and final position.
