RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Halifax Wanderers vs. Vancouver FC | August 22, 2026

CanPL

The Halifax Wanderers have snapped a five-game winless run in Canadian Premier League play, as they defeated Vancouver FC 1-0 at Wanderers Grounds on Saturday.

Thanks to that, they were able to provisionally jump into fifth place in the CPL table, putting them just seven points behind fourth-place Vancouver, as they've reignited their playoff hopes with this victory.

Vancouver, meanwhile, wrapped up a week they'll want to forget, as they lost two and drew one game in a span of eight days. After having entered the start of this week on a run of five straight wins, they'll feel that they've come crashing down to earth in a big way with these three results.

Seeking a response after their last match, a 4-3 defeat to Inter Toronto last weekend, the Wanderers made five changes to their starting XI, while Vancouver made just two changes to the team that lost 4-0 to Atlético Ottawa in midweek.

Certainly, the changes had a desired impact for Halifax, as they came out of the gates quite strongly. After a couple of early half-chances, they'd find their first big chance in the 17th minute, as Isaiah Johnston found Jason Bahamboula with a low cross, but Bahamboula's shot was nicely saved by Vancouver's Callum Irving.

On the ensuing corner, however, the Wanderers would redeem that missed opportunity. It'd start with a whipped cross from Miguel Arilla, who would find Johnston at the near post, and after his flicked shot was saved by Irving, the ball fell to a wide-open Bahamboula in front of a gaping cage, and he wasn't going to miss his second opportunity in a matter of minutes to put his team ahead 1-0.

At the other end, Vancouver finally got their first big chance of the game in the 37th minute, as Thierno Bah managed to find Damiano Pecile inside the box after a good run down the flank, but Pecile's left-footed shot slammed off the crossbar and stayed out to deny Vancouver an equalizer.

Wanting to double their lead before half time, the Wanderers came close to doing so in the 44th minute, as Jefferson Alphonse found an open Johnston just inside the box, but his low shot would sail comfortably into the hands of Irving.

On the other side of the break, the Wanderers continued to push for a second, and had another big chance in the 53rd minute. It'd come after another dangerous run from Johnston, too, as he'd cut into the box and fire a low left-footed shot, one that forced a nice save out of Irving.

Vancouver found a chance on a transition moment in the 70th minute, as Marcello Polisi found Luis Toomey with a dinked ball into the box, but before Toomey could control the ball and fire a shot towards goal, Lucas Olguin stepped in and cleared the ball with a perfect tackle to save the day for the Wanderers.

Looking to find an equalizer before the death, Vancouver continued to push, even as their hunt for a goal continued into stoppage time. As a result, they had a good opportunity in the second minute of stoppage time, as Aboubacar Traore cut inside and fired a low shot, forcing an uncomfortable save out of Halifax's Marco Carducci.

Then, in the fifth minute, Morey Doner made a nice run down the right flank and floated a perfect cross for Mohamed Amissi at the back post, but his powerful header was saved by the waiting hands of Carducci, who did well to anticipate the direction of the attempt.

In the end, that'd be Vancouver's last chance of the game, as they were ultimately left empty-handed in their chase for an equalizer.

That'd allow the Wanderers to find the victory, as they continued their impressive dominance against Vancouver this season - with this victory, they've now won all three of their matchups against the Eagles, winning each of them with an identical 1-0 scoreline.

With one last meeting between these two sides on the schedule, coming in the penultimate game of the season, the Wanderers will hope they've further closed the gap between themselves and Vancouver by then, as they'll feel quite confident heading into that match given their head-to-head record this season.

"What I can say is that this win has been completely different than the two other wins," Wanderers head coach Vanni Sartini said. "Because in the two other wins, Vancouver didn't deserve to lose, but I think that today we deserved to win."
