RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Halifax Wanderers FC vs. Cavalry FC (May 10, 2025)

Highlights

Cavalry FC's winning ways continued on Saturday as they were comprehensive victors in Nova Scotia, beating the Halifax Wanderers 3-0 for a second straight triumph in Canadian Premier League action.

It was an evenly matched contest at the outset, as two defensively-sound opponents felt each other out in their first meeting of the season. Ryan Telfer had the best chance of the early stages, as Wesley Timoteo's headed flick fell to him alone in the box, but he rattled his shot off the goalpost in the 16th minute.

Near the half-hour mark, Ali Musse picked up the ball in a dangerous area at the top of the penalty area, but Kareem Sow timed his last-ditch tackle perfectly to steer it away from peril -- one of a handful of excellent tackles from both sides in the opening 45 minutes.

The cagey first half did finally produce an attacking breakthrough just moments before the break, though. Musse found his way in on goal all alone, leaving goalkeeper Rayane Yesli few options but to come out and challenge. Musse tapped the ball to his right, putting it out of Yesli's reach as the goalkeeper instead crashed through Musse and brought him down, and the referee awarded Cavalry a penalty.

Tobias Warschewski took responsibility for the spot kick and he did so with gusto, slotting the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner -- just below the hand of Yesli, who had dived the correct way.

Coming into the second half, the Wanderers set out looking for an equalizer, but the chances did not come in the first few minutes, So, coach Patrice Gheisar went to his bench at the hour mark, making a triple substitution to introduce Jason Bahamboula, Tiago Coimbra and Sean Rea.

As the home side chased a goal, though, they left more and more space behind them, and the Cavs took their chance to strike. With less than 10 minutes to play, Warschewski danced through the attacking third toward the box and found Musse, who couldn't make the cleanest contact with the ball but nonetheless directed it goalward, squeaking past Yesli to make it 2-0.

Musse went on to ice the game just two minutes later, as Shamit Shome picked the ball off Andre Rampersad and drove forward, slipping it to Musse in the box for a cool finish as the Cavs took a late three-goal lead.

So, Halifax's unbeaten record to start the CPL season met its end in matchweek six, as Cavalry climbed to seven points and fourth place in the league table.
