RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Forge FC vs. Inter Toronto | October 12, 2026
Forge FC sailed to a resounding home victory on Monday afternoon in Hamilton, as they beat 905 Derby rivals Inter Toronto 5-0 to keep pace at the top of the Canadian Premier League table. In the process, they officially eliminated Inter Toronto from playoff contention.
The win ensured Forge will remain no worse than two points off of CPL Shield leaders Cavalry FC, pending the result of their game later on Monday.
It was a particularly special Thanksgiving atmosphere on Monday for Forge's final home match of the 2026 regular season. Prior to kickoff, the club paid tribute to retiring captain Kyle Bekker in a pre-game ceremony, which included a guard of honour from both Forge and Inter Toronto players to welcome the CPL legend onto the pitch.
Perhaps emboldened by the pre-match festivities, Forge kicked off the match in top gear. Within just three minutes, they advanced deep into Toronto's half and won a free kick just inside the arc above the penalty area.
Noah Jensen, wearing the captain's armband on the day, blasted the set-piece ball just inside the right goalpost to give Forge an early lead.
The hosts didn't rest on their laurels after scoring, either; they found the net again in the ninth minute, this time courtesy of Nana Ampomah, who jumped on a bouncing loose ball in the box and laced another well-driven shot past Kai Campos.
Unfortunately for Forge, Ampomah's goal turned out to be Pyrrhic in nature, as the Ghanaian forward left the match immediately, with a leg injury he appeared to suffer while scoring.
Ben Paton came into the match to replace Ampomah, taking on a more attacking role than the midfielder normally might.
The setback did not shake Forge's aggression, and they continued to pour on the first-half chances. Antoine Batisse bagged a third goal for the Hammers just before the half-hour mark, slotting it through traffic after the ball fell to him from a corner-kick.
That goal wasn't without controversy; replays appeared to show that Forge's Dan Nimick handled the ball when he brought down the cross to set it for Batisse. After a lengthy review with the FVS system, however, the referee ruled the handball incidental and awarded the goal — much to the outrage of Mauro Eustáquio and Inter Toronto.
After a catastrophic first half, Eustáquio went to his bench during the interval and made a triple substitution to begin the second frame. Ty Clarke, Sebastián Gonzales and Carlos Guzmán all checked into the game, hoping to help the visitors find some kind of foothold.
Instead, Toronto's nightmare afternoon worsened almost immediately after the second half began. Forge scored their fourth goal less than 60 seconds after kickoff, as an unguarded Marko Jevremović pounced on a loose ball rolling across the box and smashed home his second of the season.
Forge drove one final nail into Inter Toronto's season in the 89th minute. Paton collected a pass in the half-space outside the box and played a superb give-and-go sequence with Ismael Oketokoun, setting up Paton to finish the play himself with another well-powered strike to make it 5-0 for the Hammers.
All in all, it was a near-perfect afternoon for Forge, who honoured their captain by producing their most comprehensive attacking performance of the season to date.
The Hammers were decisive and ruthless going forward; it was clear that they'd identified ways to exploit Toronto's press, which allowed Forge to attack into the space left behind the wing-backs.
Assistant coach Georgios Kyriazis, shouldering media duties with head coach Bobby Smyrniotis serving a one-match suspension, added that he was thrilled to see the team sticking to its plan for the full 90 minutes.
"We knew that Inter Toronto would come and be aggressive, they're going to press high, so they're going to have a lot of space in behind," Kyriazis said. "We said to the guys that they had to expose that space and take advantage, because we have a little bit of speed. But the one thing that makes everybody happy is the goals they scored. Five goals, it doesn't happen every day."
Smyrniotis has mentioned several times in the past few weeks that Forge's priority is to ensure they're playing their best football at this late stage of the season, when they still have three trophies on the table (the CPL Shield, North Star Cup and Voyageurs' Cup). The past two home wins, where they've outscored Toronto and Pacific FC by a combined eight goals to nil, have certainly looked like performances that fit the upward momentum Smyrniotis is looking for.
Inter Toronto, meanwhile, have now seen their playoff hopes flicker out in painful fashion.
Their head coach Mauro Eustáquio was, unsurprisingly, morose after the game, expressing frustration with his team's performances in general and adding that he'd been incredibly disappointed with how easily his side had been pushed aside in this game.
"It's as simple as there was no fight, there was no soul," Eustáquio said postmatch. "Far from anything that I preach, far from anything that we should be doing. Today there was only one team on the field."
Eustáquio added that all he wants to see now in the final two matches is some more pride from his team, to end the season with a modicum of positivity.
More to come.
