RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC vs. Edmonton Scottish United | 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship
Cavalry FC advanced to the quarter-finals of the TELUS Canadian Championship on Tuesday night, after comfortably beating League1 Alberta's Edmonton Scottish United SC 6-0 at ATCO Field.
The Cavs played a rotated squad, with head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr giving five players their first starts for the club -- Joseph Holliday in net, Mihail Gherasimencov and Levi Laing in the backline, and Owen Antoniuk and Caniggia Elva in attack. It was also a club debut for Antoniuk, who was the League1 Alberta Golden Boot winner last year and one of Cavalry's selections in the latest CPL-U SPORTS Draft.
Edmonton's starting lineup featured several players with CPL experience, including former FC Edmonton players Tboy Fayia, Chance Carter, Marcus Simmons and Marcus Velado-Tsegaye.
Elva, who scored his first Canadian Premier League goal on the weekend, gave the hosts the lead in the ninth minute with their first shot, heading home an early corner kick and following it up with an acrobatic celebration. Niko Myroniuk doubled the lead for the Cavs less than ten minutes later. The 19-year-old took a couple of touches to his right after receiving the ball near the edge of the penalty area before firing the ball off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for his first goal for the club.
The Scottish built a bit of momentum around the half-hour mark, firing a couple of crosses into the penalty area, but the Cavalry backline was able to swiftly deal with the limited threats coming their way.
The hosts got back to work after the temporary dip, with Jay Herdman firing a high shot over the bar after a feed from Nicolas Wähling. Moments later Myroniuk sent a low shot past the same side of the net off a corner kick, but his effort missed wide of the mark.
Just before the end of the half, Rilind Idrizi had Edmonton's first real attempt to fire a shot at Holliday, but he mis-hit his effort and it soared away toward the corner flag. The Cavs kept their comfortable two-goal lead going into halftime as a result.
Ten minutes after the break the Edmontonians made a promising move up the left flank, but when a low cross fell to Philip Masri in the penalty area he wasn't able to hit it cleanly and it bounced wide of Holliday's net. Moments later the visitors attacked again, with former Cavs attacker José Hernández dribbling past a couple of defenders before it too was eventually scuffed wide of the Cavalry net.
Just when there was a glimmer of hope for the Scottish, though, Nicolas Wähling put the game to bed in the 61st minute. After running onto a through ball from Elva, the German attacker picked out the top right corner for his first as a Cav. Ali Musse made it four in the 72nd minute, poking the ball past the Edmonton goalkeeper and off the left post and in to extend their lead to four.
Not to be outdone, Max Piepgrass decided to take a strike from long range, and the goalkeeper Bohrson could only get a slight touch on it as it sailed over his head, making it five for Cavalry. It was Piepgrass' first for the Cavs as well after signing a CPL-U Sports contract to begin another such stint with the club on Monday.
Tobias Warschewski put the icing on the cake in the 87th minute, tapping the ball in from a couple of yards out after Wähling got on the end of Warschewski's initial pass, and centred it back for his fellow German to score an easy sixth.
Edmonton took a couple of ambitious shots late in the game as the clock ticked toward the final whistle, but one was saved by Holliday and the other came back off the woodwork as Cavalry held on for their clean sheet and a 6-0 final score.
They move on to the quarter-finals where they will take on either Vancouver FC or Pacific FC.
