PREVIEW: CanMNT 🇨🇦 U-20s take on Jamaica 🇯🇲 (again) in hunt for World Cup, Olympics spot 💪
It’s déjà vu for Canada’s U20 men’s national team, who are set to take on Jamaica at the U20 Concacaf Championship on Wednesday.
Despite taking on the same Jamaica side in the final match of their group-stage campaign just days earlier, they’ll get a rematch less than a week later. Given that both sides combined for an entertaining 2-2 draw in that first game, that’s not bad news from a neutral perspective, although it’s quite unfortunate for both that the format allowed for a matchup like this to happen, especially this early in the knockout round.
While that storyline will dominate attention, however, it can’t be forgotten that this rematch will have a lot more at stake in it - the winner will qualify for the U20 World Cup, with the loser finding themselves eliminated.
As a reminder, Canada haven’t qualified for the U20 World Cup since hosting the tournament in 2007, while Jamaica hasn’t qualified since 2001, showing why this game is so significant for both teams, who would love to snap those respective droughts at next year’s World Cup.
Therefore, if you thought that their 2-2 draw was a spicy affair, as both teams jostled to win the group but had to settle for splitting the spoils, you can only imagine what will be at stake when they take the field on Wednesday.

From a Canadian perspective, however, it’ll be fascinating to see how they handle this game, as they’ve not had a great record in knockout games at the last two U20 Concacaf Championship tournaments. In 2024, they were eliminated in the quarter-final against Panama in extra time, and they were eliminated on penalties by Guatemala in the Round of 16 in 2022.
That’s worth noting, as one has to imagine that there is a strong chance that this game goes to extra time. Given that the recent matchup between these two teams finished tied, and that they each finished with a win and two draws in the group stage, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them finish tied in regular time.
At the same time, to stick with Canada, it’ll also be important that they find a way to protect their leads, as that’s the only reason why they didn’t finish the group stage with three wins, which could’ve allowed them to have an easier quarter-final matchup.
In each of their three group stage games, they had a second-half lead, which is why they’ll be frustrated that they only won one of those games, with that one being against a Panama team that had been reduced to 10 players after a first-half red card.

As one would expect from a team that has been coached by CanMNT bench boss Jesse Marsch, who has lent a hand to this team for this tournament, Canada has started games strongly, doing well to play on the front foot. That’s been good to see, as that was hoped to be one of the big benefits of Marsch’s presence around the team, which was to impose a similar methodology on this U20 team to the one he uses at the senior level.
Yet, unlike the senior team, who have typically had a good record when taking the lead in matches, Canada’s U20s have struggled with that side of their game in this tournament, which is perhaps a sign of their inexperience.
Because of that, look for Canada to make sure that they finish this quarter-final as strongly as they’ll be expected to start it - especially if it remains in the balance deep into regular time and into extra time (if they get that far).
Otherwise, though, Canada will also look to be a bit more dangerous offensively - while they scored six goals in three games, they generated just 2.46 xG in their last two games, with 0.76 of that coming from a penalty earned against Jamaica. While they were free-flowing in their opener against Panama, scoring three goals and generating 2.41 xG (they did also have a penalty in that game), they were unable to maintain that sort of attacking freedom in their next two games. 
As seen by the fact that they’ve overperformed their xG by over a goal, and their non-penalty xG by just over 0.6 goals, this is a team that has been pretty dangerous once they’ve gotten the ball to the box (other than a few missed chances against Honduras that they’ll want back). They’ll just need to get the ball to more dangerous areas than they did in their first meeting against Jamaica, where they generated just one big chance across 90 minutes of action.
At the other end of the pitch, meanwhile, they’ve been good defensively, conceding just three goals in three games, and giving up just 3.49 xG (with 0.76 of that coming from a penalty) - their issue has been more the late timing of the goals they’ve conceded and how they’ve protected their leads.
They did have some small issues against Jamaica, who generated five big chances against Canada, which is worth watching out for, but it’s worth noting that Canada rotated their lineup a fair bit for that game, which perhaps could’ve led to a bit more defensive mishaps. Given that they conceded just 1.38 xG combined across the Panama and Honduras games, you would like to believe that is a truer reflection of their defensive level, even if some might suggest that Jamaica was the best attack they likely faced (which would seem unfair to Honduras, who had good moments but struggled to turn them into chances against a stingy Canadian defence).
Of course, for all of the talk about how Canada has performed as a team this tournament, it’s worth noting that they’ll be asking for a big game from some individuals in this quarter-final. At the end of the day, these big games are often decided by individuals, and Canada has seen that first-hand at past tournaments, where they’ve put in good performances and haven’t been able to capitalize on them due to mistakes they’ve made at both ends of the pitch.
Therefore, look for them to lean on some of the players who have so far made a positive impression at this tournament.

At the back, Sergei Kozlovskiy will be leaned on heavily at centre back, especially after he was rested in this first Jamaica game. While Canada has a few options to lean on at the back, such as Félix Samson, who has also had a strong tournament, Zayne Bruno and Richard Chukwu, just to name a few, Kozlovskiy has done a lot of important work on both sides of the ball to ensure Canada’s backline is steady - and it stands out that Canada’s defensive numbers slipped in the one game he didn’t start.
Meanwhile, in midfield, Emrick Fotsing will also want to have a big game after resting against Jamaica, as he scored two goals and earned an assist in Canada’s first two games, in which he served as the team’s captain. With his ability to progress the ball and make runs into the box, he did a lot to make Canada more dangerous on the ball, which is likely why they weren’t as dangerous offensively in that first game against Jamaica.

Then, in attack, look for Lucas Lima and Marius Aiyenero to step up, as they’ve been the two liveliest Canadian players offensively. Lima, in particular, has brought some good flair on the ball and scored a great goal vs. Honduras, while Aiyenero’s movement and runs have been hard for defenders to deal with.

At the same time, don’t forget about Liam Mackenzie and Owen Graham-Roache, who have had quieter tournaments than hoped so far, as they’ve got the quality to step up and provide a decisive moment in this quarter-final.
Granted, Mackenzie has had some good moments on the ball that have flown under the radar, and he scored a penalty in Canada’s opening game, but he’ll want to put a statement performance in this match to show why many believe he’s the team’s best player - Graham-Roache, meanwhile, will hope that he can find a way to generate the sort of chances that he earned in the group stage, but this time provide a clinical touch in those moments.
Overall, though, there are a lot of players who will feel capable of stepping up and delivering a signature moment - while this Canadian team isn’t as loaded as hoped due to the timing of this tournament, this is still a very strong squad, and their group stage performances mostly reflect that.

If anything, as seen above, the only reason they didn’t sweep the group stage was due to little moments - so if they can clean that up, they’ll feel confident of their ability to get through this quarter-final and to earn a berth in the semi-final.
They do that, and they won’t care about how the group stage went - such is the nature of these tournaments.
Because of that, look for them to take what they learned, clean up those mistakes, and tackle this game with a fresh mind. At the end of the day, they’ll know this is a one-off game, one where they can make new history if all goes right for them.
