Marcelo Flores makes impression in CanMNT debut, credits comeback to 'Canadian DNA' 🇨🇦

Plenty of stories emerged from the Canadian men's national team's 2-2 draw with Iceland on Saturday, but perhaps none more positive than Marcelo Flores' debut.

The 22-year-old Tigres UANL winger, now finally committed to Canada after recently switching his allegiance from Mexico, stepped on the pitch at BMO Field with the score 2-0 for the visitors. Just a few short minutes later, Canada were back in it, and Flores' energy played no small part in that.

"We went two goals down; that’s hard on some teams, to pick themselves back up," Flores told reporters, grinning in his first Canada post-match scrum. "But with the mentality and the DNA we have as Canadians, we always find a way to bring it back."

Flores' first cap has been a long time in the making. He has three caps for Mexico, but in late 2025 he began discussions with Jesse Marsch around swapping to Canada. He filed his one-time switch earlier this year, and now finally introduced himself to the fans at BMO Field — with dyed-red cornrows to match the occasion.

The Georgetown, Ont. native was arguably the most entertaining player on the pitch in the second half; he ran endlessly, looking to create give-and-go opportunities with teammates, and he never gave up on a ball, often trying to dance between Icelandic players in the final third.

He made two successful dribbles in his half-hour shift and went 7/10 in pass accuracy, all of them played in the attacking half. His sense of urgency on the ball seemed to spread to the rest of the Canada team once he was on the pitch.

"Everybody could see that Marcelo made a big impression," Marsch said in his press conference after the game.

The Canada coach went on to add that Flores' inclusion in the team will be a major asset going forward, because so much of his skillset is unique from any of the other attacking options Canada have.

"His comfort in tight spaces, and his ability to see little plays, and not lose balls under pressure," Marsch added. "He's really clean, and quick, and clever on seeing plays and initiating little combinations. Whether he plays on the right, whether he plays on the left, I even think he can play like a second striker for us at times. That's something we don't necessarily have. Jonny [David] can do some of that, but Jonny's also a striker, and Marcelo is more like a creative midfielder that in tight spaces can have little solutions by how he's able to turn quickly in spots, then see little slashing runs. The team's got to continue to learn how to play with him, and then we can use him as a real weapon."

Flores himself, who seemed thrilled to finally play for Marsch and make his first impression before the World Cup, told reporters that he's grateful for the freedom he's given with Canada to play his own style, and go looking for the ball.

"I come in and just try to show what I’m about, because if you don’t bring your identity, then anyone could be in that place," he said. "You have to show who you are and why you deserve to be here."

After showing fans a brief glimpse of who he is on Saturday, Flores could well be in line for a larger role on Tuesday against Tunisia.
