Cavalry FC signs Callum Montgomery for 2023 CPL season
Calgary, AB (February 9, 2023) – Cavalry FC has signed 25-year-old Canadian center-back Callum Montgomery.
The British Columbia native joins the Calgary club as a free agent following time in MLS, where he played for FC Dallas and Minnesota United. The NCAA graduate spent his college career playing for the Charlotte 49ers, making 73 appearances for the North Carolina side, and scoring 11 goals, naming him a First Team All-American and Conference USA Defender of The Year. Montgomery later played for Victoria Highlanders, where he made 25 appearances before being selected as the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas. During his time with FC Dallas, Montgomery went on loan to USL side San Antonio FC. He was later traded to Minnesota United, where he went on another loan move to the USL, this time with San Diego SC. Montgomery made a total of 49 appearances across the USL during his two loan spells. Montgomery also comes with experience at the national level, having appeared for the U23 Canadian National Team.
“I’m very excited to be joining Cavalry FC,” said Montgomery. “They’re a club that I have followed for quite some time who are known for their organization, clever attacks, and aggressive style of play. I’m looking forward to contributing to the group in any way that I can as well as integrating myself in the Calgary community.”
“Callum was a much sought-after defender following his departure from Minnesota FC,” said Cavalry FC Head Coach and General Manager, Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “There are few young, domestic left-sided centre backs with good professional experience, so I’m delighted we were able to attract him to our club. He has great attributes that we can add to our back line and give us balance, defensive stability and has a terrific passing range. On top of that, he is a person with high character and great leadership qualities that I’m sure teammates and supporters will enjoy having him in our colours.”
